Head ‘em up and move them out!
Public Sculpture Project in Mount Holly for First Night.
Project Overview:
Each year in celebration of the New Year, fiberglass animal
sculptures, painted and embellished by local artists, are
displayed in and around Mount Holly from November to January.
We’ve had monkeys and we’ve had roosters. Last
year we didn’t have rats. This year we are back with
oxen.
The idea of getting local artists to decorate fiberglass animals
and display them around town began with a Cows on Parade exhibit
in Zurich during the summer of 1998, moved to Chicago in 1999,
and came to New York in the summer of 2000. Since then, dozens
of towns have done it: pink flamingos in Miami Beach, mustangs
in Santé Fe, bears in Berlin, donkeys and elephants
in DC. Mount Holly was the first town in South Jersey to host
such an exhibit.
This year regional artists will paint and embellish the fiberglass
oxen for display at Habitat Sponsor business locations from
November - January. Artists are requested to submit preliminary
designs for review and display.
Main Street Mount Holly will arrange for the animals to be
mounted onto a base; an identifying plaque will be affixed
to the base naming the sponsor, artist and title of the piece.
