March

Women’s History Month

Women's Art, Women's Vision: An Exhibit of Rugs and Needlework

The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders presents an exhibit of hooked rugs and needlework by the Pinelands “Goat Hill” Rug Hookers and the Colonial West Jersey Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America. The work will include rugs and needlework from the traditional to the experimental.

Each year, March is designated as National Women’s History Month to ensure that the history of American women will be recognized and celebrated in schools, workplaces, and communities throughout the country. The stories of women's historic achievements present an expanded view of the complexity and contradiction of living a full and purposeful life.

The knowledge of women's history provides a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. This perspective can encourage girls and women to think larger and bolder and can give boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience.

Exhibit Dates: March 10-28, 2009

Reception: Tuesday, March 10, 7-9pm

April

“Art in Hand: The World of Artist Trading Cards” and a selection of pieces from the Burlington County Teen Arts Festival

The emerging art media of Artist Trading Cards will be exhibited in the Smithville Mansion Annex Art Gallery in April. Submissions will come from local, national, and international participants in various media including, painting, drawing, photography, collage, fiber and digital art.

Artist Trading Cards are miniature works of art measuring 2 ½” x 3 ½” that are made to trade between artists. ATC trading isn't a new concept. In 1996, Swiss artist M. Vanci Stirnemann produced a catalogue of 1,200 handmade cards and he exhibited them in Zurich in 1997. He then invited anyone who wanted one of his cards to create their own to trade during the closing reception of his exhibition. Artists were fuelled by such creative inspiration that soon ATC trading sessions were sprouting in cities around the world.

Exhibit Dates: April 4-29 (ATC) April 4- May 27 (Teen Arts)

New Views 2009

“Art Along the Rancocas: Flora, Fauna, Bridges, Dams, Towns and Industry”

Artists were invited to exercise their creativity by choosing a variety of subjects from nature to history, from commerce to recreation, and more to memorialize the multi-faceted Rancocas and places associated with it. Along the Rancocas there are bridges, dams and mills, marinas and homes, and in some spots, ruins of structures from days gone by. There are at least a dozen historic towns built on the banks of the Rancocas. The history and culture of Burlington County cannot be defined without the inclusion of the Rancocas.
